James has played an integral role in powering High-Speed Transport connectivity. An Embedded Software Engineer, James has 20 years of experience in the industry and is an expert in his discipline. While developing crucial pieces of software which drive the real-world applications of Blu Wireless’s technology, he also manages a team of five people in Bristol as well as a team of consultants in India.
We spoke to him to find out what has inspired him during his time at Blu Wireless and what it’s like to work here.
How have you developed professionally at Blu Wireless?
James: My skillset has expanded massively since joining Blu Wireless. In the space of a couple years, I’ve gone from writing software to leading my own team of software developers, both at home and abroad. This has provided me with great new perspectives and insights, pushing me onto the next level.
What has been your favourite project to work on and what was your role within that?
James: The Linux driver was a highlight because I wrote a large chunk of the code for it. The driver is the part of the Linux operating system that talks to our hardware, playing a fundamental role in the company’s day-to-day operations. It’s been really fulfilling to see that expand and have other people contribute to it.
In what ways do you think Blu Wireless is unique to its competitors?
James: The pace of progress here really stands out. A lot of research and development companies get stuck in that phase and it can take several years before the technology even gets close to being implemented. We’ve managed it in just 18 months.
What do you like about working with the rest of the Blu Wireless team?
James: At Blu Wireless, there’s someone from every discipline. I really like how people with different skillsets interlink because it fosters an open, dynamic working environment without communication barriers. Our size also allows us to move a lot faster than bigger companies – if we have a good idea, we can just get on with it, without it being stuck in the boardroom for months.
What opportunities do employees at Blu Wireless benefit from?
James: What I’ve found is that the company appreciates individuality, allowing you to take control of your role and maximise your attributes. It’s also a great place to broaden your skillset and take advantage of internal opportunities. Everyone here is very interactive and keen to mentor people who want to develop.
What would you say to anyone who was considering applying to Blu Wireless?
James: If you want to grow alongside a company and work on technology that’s going to have a huge real-world impact, I’d say look no further than Blu Wireless. There are a lot of talented people here and we all push each other to improve – there’s always room for more! The space we work in is really open too, helping that co-operative atmosphere.
Finally, describe Blu Wireless in three words
James: Innovative, agile and collaborative.
